For anyone who does not know what gimp is… it is the best full featured and FREE image editing program in existence! And no, pirating a copy of Photoshop does not make the program count as free.
Also it works on windows too, just saying.
Oh and guess what? It just got twice as good! I would not have believed it myself had I not pulled gimp-git from the AUR just now.
The one big issue with gimp was always with how it handled toolbars. They would not follow the regular rules of the window manager and would constantly need re-sizing or get lost in the sauce. Also they would prevent you from using maximize properly because the would hover over the sides of the window covering stuff.
Apparently that less than small issue will be resolved with the release of gimp 2.8. Even better news! It should be out by the end of the year.
Of course, if the development track record is anything to go by then we will actually be getting it sometime in 2015, but hay – they try their best.

This is the main feature I really want in GIMP, but I don’t know if it is enough to replace Photoshop. However, if GIMP 2.8 has a warp tool (which my version of PS doesn’t have) I may switch immediately!
I see something like it in the tools section in the image up there, but I don’t know if it’s what I’m looking for.
Yea, it has a warp tool. Actually it has a few… but the perspective tool is the one I think you are thinking of.
I think that the warp tools are actually a bit more expansive in 2.8 than they are right now, but the functionality is there. For example, in 2.8 gimp will overlay a grid while stretching stuff so you can see what you are doing a bit better.
Also 2.8 is the first version to include the cage transform tool, as far as I know. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLt3Uo5cMbA Infinitely more useful than the perspective tool.
And if you don’t find what you need in the application by default chances are that it exists. http://registry.gimp.org/ Gotta love plugins!
It’s not perspective I’m looking for, but something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_pkpBEVYZE&feature=player_detailpage#t=178s
it’s on the Photoshop CS versions, but I have 7 :/ It’s really useful for adding patterns on clothing.
Oh, I see what you are saying now. That is useful.
Finally! gimp is still usually my choice of program, but having to deal with tons of windows opening up and the two random side bars always got confusing.
Wow about damn time. Always thought krita had such a great ui compared to gimp. Now it finally looks somewhat sane.
If I’m not completely wrong it’s also possible to arrange the layers in folders in GIMP 2.7.
@MaTachi
That does appear to be the case.
AAh! Gimp is the best free photoshop out there! But I hated that multi-window, it was one of those pet peeves that prevented me from using Gimp. I’m looking forward to 2.8 even though I haven’t been using it very often, hopefully, the new changes will make me love it again.
Since I’m a mac user I would also love it if they made an application instead of using X11 to run it, I think it would be a lot faster as well. But seeing this is done by a non-profit team, I doubt it coming any time soon ;A;
@Orange-sama
Hahaha, I remember running stuff in x11 on the family mac.
Those were good times, provided that the software did not decide to crash.
Yea, I don’t think you will be seeing a native version of gimp any time soon. It would be an absurd amount of work to get that working.
